Our human impact on marine biodiversity is currently overlooked.
Marine Biodiversity Footprint is a tool to fill this gap.
It assesses the impact of products on marine biodiversity,
in order to drive improvements where and when it matters.
GOALS

MEASURE
MBF project aims to answer the lack of specific tool to assess impact of different products on biodiversity. Its goal is to develop a method and a tool crossing science knowledge and companies’ data to quantify the impacts of a marine product on biodiversity along its life cycle stages.

MONITOR
MBF project provides a tool for companies to manage their biodiversity impact independently, with concrete indicators on biodiversity pressures. It allows companies to set targets and define strategies to achieve those targets.

IMPROVE
MBF project brings together up to date scientific data and knowledge and provides quantitative results for decision making. Businesses can then improve their product strategy in terms of e.g. ecodesign, purchasing, consumer information …

Wide scope
We address the five pressures as per IPBES 2019: Direct exploitation (overfishing and bycatch), Climate change, Habitat change, Invasive species and Pollution.
As a starting point, we rely on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology as per the latest scientific knowledge. LCA displays shortcomings for e.g. invasive species or overexploitation. We develop additional indicators to cover pressures which are not (fully) taken into account.

Disciminating capacity
The main objective is to improve environmental performance of a product by identifying environmental hotspots that can be improved and assist eco-design approaches. MBF aims to define a product with lower impacts on biodiversity.
LCA framework is used to produce the relative differences between variants. It is complemented by ecological data for full relevance in terms of biodiversity indicators.
